Selena Gomez vs Lady Gaga vs Ariana Grande: Who Will Come Out Victorious This Award Season?
The tradition of singers crossing over into acting- or the other way around- has always been a well-worn path in the entertainment world. While not everyone can make the jump from the stage to the screen as seamlessly as one might dream, some stars manage to shine in both worlds. Right now, the big names on the list are the Disney alums- Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande- and the new DC recruit, Lady Gaga. Each of these stars is in the running for Best Supporting Actress this awards season, with their upcoming movies just around the corner.
The question, however, is- which of these multi-hyphenates has the best shot of shining the brightest this season.

Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande have all been exploring the acting world for quite some time. This year, the three singer-actors have their own musicals on the way. While all their projects have created quite a buzz, Selena Gomez still seems to be leading the pack. Among the trio, the Ramona and Beezus star brings the most acting experience to the table. She has already bagged the Best Actress award for her role in Emilia Pérez at the Cannes Film Festival and received an Emmy nomination for Only Murders in the Building this year.
Emilia Pérez is still waiting for its worldwide release, having premiered only at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2024. Despite this, it is already earning glowing reviews, and Selena Gomez is on the Academy’s radar as well. While the 'Who Says' singer is busy with her musical crime comedy, Ariana Grande has a musical fantasy film, Wicked, hitting the screens in November 2024. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga has got the musical psychological thriller Joker: Folie à Deux lined up, with an international release scheduled for October 2, 2024.
Here is why Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga might lag behind Selena Gomez this awards season, despite their exciting projects.

The last time Ariana Grande made a memorable acting impression was on Nickelodeon’s Victorious and Sam & Cat. So, it is hard to say how she will fare in a full-feature role. Also, Wicked’s director Jon M. Chu has had a mixed track record. His work has been either pretty good or atrocious. On top of that, the initial trailer for Wicked did not exactly hit the mark, so while it might perform well commercially, a critical success is hard to predict.
Lady Gaga, meanwhile, has already caught the Academy’s eye with her performance in A Star Is Born. She could be a strong contender. However, some fans are wary about the Joker franchise taking a musical turn, and its new format has been receiving mixed reactions from the start. Therefore, Gaga might have to really deliver an out-of-the-box performance to beat Selena Gomez in the Best Supporting Actress race.
