“...hated It”–Shakira Stirs a Debate With Her Family’s Perspective Review of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’
The 2024 Oscars stood out in fervor as Ryan Gosling swooned over the audience with his ‘I’m Just Ken’ performance. Additionally, the impact of a movie that transcended borders to deliver a poignant awareness about women and their subjugation throughout centuries won at the box office, with a lifetime gross of over $1.4 billion. Despite the Margot Robbie starrer impressing several A-listers, Shakira would like to differ slightly with her review of the Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie.
Needless to say, the movie stands as a tent pole best for modern cinema. However, the singer’s perspective and verdict come after some inside inputs.

Barbie stood out for many reasons such as Greta Gerwig’s ability to narrate a story around a fourth-wall-breaking doll, a resounding original soundtrack, but most famously for the in-movie monologue delivered by America Ferrera’s character summarizing woman prejudice. In talks with Allure, Shakira, however, revealed that “My sons absolutely hated it.” Additionally, she also agreed “to a certain extent” when 11-year-old Milan and 9-year-old Sasha conveyed that “emasculating”.
The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ singer went on to debate the message of empowerment conveyed by the movie. In her stance, she cleared on supporting pop culture movies and media that depict empowering women without “robbing men of their possibility to be men”. Furthermore, she believed that men and women both serve a particular purpose and in turn “complement” one another. Thus, “that complement should not be lost”. Regardless, her review kick-started a fiery debate on social media with many disagreeing but few leaning into her side as well.
Away from debates, the effect of Barbie on mainstream pop culture stands almost irreversible as the pink juggernaut struck a chord with millions. Despite such a feat, the chances of a sequel stay slim.

Margot Robbie delivered a mild disappointment when she steered clear away of the chances of a follow-up movie to Barbie ever taking place. The actress wished to bask in the success brought forward by the movie while claiming that its narrative did not fit as one “designed to be a trilogy”. Furthermore, she also took the example of how sequels only became a recent trend and also touched upon, not wanting to degrade the impeccable quality of the original.
Differing and agreeing upon it, Greta Gerwig believed that a sequel to Barbie could happen, but chances stood incredibly slim. “I’m not dismissing it, I want to do it,” claimed the director, but hinted at having to win over Robbie’s approval. However, both did hint at the prospect of making movies with an impact similar to the Oscar-nominated flick, setting the stage for chances to come in the future.
