Barbie, the highest-grossing movie of 2023, clinched cinematic and box office achievement award at Golden Globes. It pushed back the noteworthy competition, including Taylor Swift, nominated for her groundbreaking concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. This film holds the title of the highest-grossing documentary and concert film ever, amassing an impressive $261.6 million worldwide. But still, it could not conquer the pink in the room.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse lost to The Boy and the Heron

Fans have witnessed the monumental success of Across the Spider-Verse as a superhero film. Despite its triumph, it was The Boy and the Heron that emerged victorious at the Golden Globes in the Best Motion Picture: Animated category. Directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, who returned from retirement at 83, the film marked a historic moment by debuting at the pinnacle of the domestic box office in December.

Bradley Cooper’s Maestro had a disappointing night 

Bradley Cooper’s portrayal of Leonard Bernstein in Maestro fell short of winning Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture–Drama at the Globes. The actor lost to the talented Irish actor Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer who received his Golden lady with lipstick on his nose.

While the competition between the two was anticipated, Cooper’s Globe record now reflects six nominations without a win.

Kieran Culkin beat Pedro Pascal

Pedro Pascal received a nomination for a role in the American post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us. However, much to his fans’ disappointment, Kieran Culkin won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama. During his acceptance speech, he even joked with his fellow nominee, saying “Suck it, Pedro,” and beamed with pride for his first award.

Ricky Gervais defeated Chris Rock

Ricky Gervais, renowned as a five-time Globes host, clinched the inaugural award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television for Ricky Gervais: Armageddon. The win was unexpected, especially given the anticipation that Chris Rock, with his special Chris Rock: Selective Outrage, would secure the award. Rock’s comedy special marked his return since the memorable Academy Awards incident where he was slapped by Will Smith.
