The Barbarians set in Germany in AD 9 is a dramatization of the events that led to the battle of the Teutoburg Forest, in which Germanic tribes confronted three legions of the Roman Empire. This war is seen as crucial as it stopped Rome from spreading to northern Europe. However, the essence of the series is the friendship of three Germanic children who separated during the Roman occupation and found each other again years later.
