“As a baby, I was just trying to hear them”: Oscar Nominated Docu-Short, ‘Audible’ Star Amaree McKenstry-Hall Talks About His Childhood, the Film, and More
Sports documentaries are more than often very predictable and boring. Straight into the film, you know which team or player is favored, and more or less, all of them have similar struggles to overcome. But what Netflix has done with its newest short documentary, Audible has completely changed the genre.
The new Academy Award-nominated short film shows the life and struggles of a deaf high school football player. The film follows him for just one week. The movie marks to aware people of the struggles of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in Deaf History Month.

The documentary has a runtime of only 39 minutes. But those 39 minutes will stay with you for your whole day. While talking about how his family, with whom Amaree has a strained relation as rightly shown in the film when they saw the movie, they started weeping, said the film’s main star.
“They were crying; they were shocked,” said the 21-year-old. He even adds that his family apologized to him after the film’s screening, as they never understood his struggles. “They had the opportunity to learn A.S.L., but they didn’t,”
While talking about how his childhood as the only deaf person in the family, Amaree said with a pause, “As a baby, I was just trying to hear them.”
Nyle DiMarco and Amaree on Deaf History Month
Audible started streaming on Netflix on April 29th, 2021. The film celebrates Deaf History Month. And on the topic of the documentary, it also creates awareness for Deaf History Month, Amaree, and the films, Executive Producer Nyle DiMarco talked about the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community and how they are capable of the same things as others.

Nyle is an actor and a model who raise to popularity in Dancing with the Stars and won America’s Next Top Model. Nyle is the first deaf winner of the show and is a deaf activist himself.
While talking about the Month, Nyle says, “There isn’t anything that we cant do. We will succeed.” And Amaree shares a moving quote from his coach.

His coach says “Football is the venue to show the world what we are made of.”
