There were some proofs pointing at Overwatch and Diablo series coming Netflix, but we haven’t heard from it for a long time. What happened to them?
It is no secret that Blizzard Entertainment has some huge IPs, some of them with deep lore portrayed by animations created by brilliant teams. Overwatch is a perfect example of this, while Diablo does not come short either. These games were rumored to be adapted into series by Netflix. Rumors were not to be taken with a grain of salt though, as there were many legit proofs leading us to believe Netflix was onto something.
Are Overwatch and Diablo series coming to Netflix soon?
After leaving another BlizzCon behind, we still have not heard about those series, neither do we have an official announcement. But what led us to believe Overwatch and Diablo were going to be series? Let’s go back and recap.
The fate of the Diablo series
It all started with a tweet by Andrew Cosby, who then founded BOOM! Studios, which currently has an agreement with Netflix concerning them creating live-action and animated shows for the streaming platform. He revealed back in 2018 that he was in final talks with Activision and Netflix to show-run an animated Diablo series. Half a year after that, a trademark was registered for a Diablo series. Andrew Cosby also tweeted in 2019 that he could not talk about his new super-secret project which was “just frikkin’ cool”.
“I guess I can confirm I am indeed in final talks to write and show-run the new DIABLO animated series for Activision and Netflix. It’s very exciting and I hope to High Heavens it all works out.”
We are yet to hear about the Diablo series as of now. Cosby is the founder of BOOM! Studios, which holds the hopes high, but there’s nothing certain.
What about the Overwatch series?
The source of the rumor about the Overwatch series is Nick van Dyk, who is the co-president of Activision Blizzard Entertainment. Back in February 2020, he revealed via LinkedIn that there were animated series both of Diablo and Overwatch. His profile also stated, “With my creative partner, developed and sold an animated series based on Blizzard’s Overwatch franchise.” If the projects are not a cock and bull story, it is highly likely that both of them are being developed by BOOM! Studios.
So, what now?
We know that many companies, especially Netflix as we saw from The Witcher and DOTA: Dragon’s Blood, are interested in adapting video games for TVs or cinemas. Overwatch and Diablo are among the most possible games, so it is quite understandable that Netflix wants to use this opportunity.
There are no official announcements regarding Overwatch and Diablo series, but it is likely that we can hear about it sooner or later.
