The anime community’s stance on Netflix’s live-action adaptation of one of their favorite animes has had a rebirth since One Piece was released. Decades of grudges were forgiven and forgotten as Monkey D. Luffy and his crewmates delivered a delicious adventure for not just fans of the anime, but also newcomers. But when inquired about the success of the series and if a second season was in the works, showrunner, Steven Maeda told Variety, that making the first season was “such a bear.”
Maeda is referring to how the creators had to clarify baseless allegations just days before the series aired. This was especially frustrating, as they had always been clear about their intentions.
While the making of the first season was such a “bear“, its reception has been nothing short of a ray of sunshine. Fans have gone as far as to appreciate the deviations from the main storyline. But does Netflix have the courage and also the million dollars it takes to make another season of One Piece?

Netflix was truly set on proving itself with the One Piece live-action adaptation because its fight was no less than that of Romeo’s as he tried to unite with Juliet. But the streamer was dragged through the mud and back again in all the months until the show was finally released. Neither the apt casting nor its ultra-real Going Merry ship was of any help. This is why one of the most pivotal creators has not minced his words when talking about the series’ future. But he has also not disregarded the notion of a One Piece Season 2.
Steven Maeda may have been tired and frustrated with the turbulence that came with Season 1, but he continues to hint at another chapter. He does so by not denying or accepting whether Season 2 is in the works while also indulging fans with their Smoker theory.
