Netflix had fairly recently ventured into the live-action adaptations of Cowboy Bebop, with mixed results. The series starred John Cho as Spike Spiegel, a charismatic bounty hunter with a mysterious past, and featured the original music by Yoko Kanno. However, the series also made some significant changes to the characters, tone, and story of the anime, which drew criticism from fans and critics alike. Netflix canceled the series after only one season. However, Netflix is now set to release its most ambitious live-action adaptation yet with Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, the trailer of which was recently released.
Given the popularity and acclaim of Lazarus, Netflix may want to adopt a live-action of it. However, all of it may depend on the critical reception of One Piece. Moreover, Netflix recently faced a viewership drop in The Witcher, which along with Henry Cavill’s exit might have been due to its deviation from source material. Therefore, for Netflix to make a creative success with Lazarus, it must stick to the source as well as respect the original theme and character origins.
