In the history of all the tables that have turned, there probably is not a table that has turned as dramatically as that of anime relevance. Once considered an underdog genre, with its fans mostly being termed as ‘nerds’, the realm of anime now sits comfortably at the pinnacle of pop culture reference. Owing to how Netflix was among the first of the streaming giants to recognize its potential and contribute greatly to its rise in the West, it was only natural for it to create the first fan-favorite anime live-action series with One Piece.

The first season of Netflix’s One Piece was met with unprecedented appreciation from the conservative anime fanbase. So much so that the creators discovered an Academy Award-winning fan of One Piece in Jamie Lee Curtis. And she may just get roped into the second season of the Straw Hat pirates’ adventures.

Given how the creators etched the stars for fans in Season 1, it was only a matter of time before Netflix confirmed Season 2 of One Piece. When the streamer announced that the Straw Hat Pirates would be returning for Season 2, fans knew just what they wanted. More specifically, who they wanted, curtsy of Jamie Lee Curtis’ Instagram post. Curtis had announced on her Instagram that she would love to be a part of One Piece and there was an uproar to cast the actress as Doctor Kureha as soon as possible. And if Matt Owens’ statement to Deadline is anything to go by, the fan expectations have aligned with that of the creators.

At this point we’re writing [the character] for her,” revealed Matt Owens. The second season of One Piece will most likely be based on the Arabasta Saga. The makers were already planning on introducing Doctor Kureha into the live-action series. However, it was Jamie Lee Curtis’ interest in the character that added the cherry on top.

The One Piece live-action series became a sensation following its release and so did its cast. Fans were blown away by how the cast mirrored the characters of the manga and felt, as Emily Rudd rightfully put it, that they were born to play their characters. But the case of Doctor Kureha and Jamie Lee Curtis’ potential casting is quite a tricky one. Doctor Kureha in the manga is an enigmatic character whose cantankerous demeanor conceals a wealth of medical expertise.

While Jamie Lee Curtis has proven through decades of phenomenal performances and an Oscar award in her name that she can bring any role to life, Doctor Kureha may be a difficult feat for her. The actress has over the decades worked in several genres, but never in an anime live-action. As evidenced by Netflix’s One Piece itself, to skilfully play a character in the series, one needs to adapt the character down to the last morsel. Only time will tell if Jamie Lee Curtis will be able to pull it off or even play the character.
