If you want to check out some of the most beautiful female characters on screen, you can immediately approach anime. The creators of these shows possess a unique ability to make anything beautiful. However, there are some shows that focus on male characters so much that the female ones become almost unlikable. One such show is one of the longest-running anime, Dragon Ball-Z.

This series has given the world some of the best-animated characters out there. Apart from the unique storyline of the show, these characters make the show a classic. Alongside notable male characters like Gohan, Goku, and Piccolo, the series also features a significant number of female characters. However, the creator of Dragon Ball-Z, Akira Toriyama, has openly acknowledged the challenges he faced when developing the female characters in the series.

The creator revealed in an interview, “Whenever I draw women, they all end up with rough personalities. I just can’t draw them more bubbly and upbeat. I can’t draw them docile and cute, either.” Basically, he can create a tough male character, but when it comes to women, he gets skeptical.

Comic Book reports that this insight into Toriyama’s challenges in creating female characters originates from a magazine called Dragon Ball Forever. Dragon Ball Forever is an old guidebook released in Japan many years ago, offering an in-depth examination of the show.

The less likable female characters of Dragon Ball Z and the creator’s perspective

There is a female character in the show called Bulma, who initially took the lead as the female protagonist, and played a crucial role in launching the manga. However, Toriyama consciously avoids creating female characters with cheerful and lively dispositions.

This preference still holds true today. Notable examples include Kale and Caulifla, two female Saiyans who possess distinct personalities but are not very upbeat. This aligns with Toriyama’s earlier remarks regarding Chi-Chi and extends to other characters as well.
