Andrew Garfield Became Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick…BOOM! Because of a “Masseur”

Netflix has many genres on its platform, but it was missing an impactful musical for a long time. Therefore, tick, tick… BOOM! starring Andrew Garfield is long overdue on the streaming platform. The Lin-Manuel Miranda directed musical will release on Netflix on November 12, 2021. Musicals might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but this one is special for many reasons.

The idea behind the film

Jon, a young theatrical composer, works as a server at a New York City café while creating what he believes would be the next great American musical. Days before a pivotal performance, he must handle pressure from all sides. With the clock ticking away, Jon finds himself at a dead-end, where he must address the question that we all face: What are we supposed to do with the time we have?

The film focuses on Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical of the same name, who revolutionized theater as the creator of Rent. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award, makes his feature directorial debut with tick, tick… BOOM!

The Masseur cast Andrew Garfield?

The producers and director have certainly done their homework for gathering a solid cast. Although the casting was, let’s just say, abnormal, it certainly delivered the result.

Before the movie, Lin and Andrew’s only connection was the mutual masseur. But Miranda landed on Andrew for the lead role after accepting the suggestion of his masseur, who suggested Andrew even though he hadn’t heard a single note from the Spiderman actor. So, if you are not getting your big Hollywood break, it’s time for you to try a new masseur.

However, after just one year’s practice, Andrew repaid the trust shown in him by Lin and his masseur. No wonder the actor has received an Academy Award nomination and has won the Tony Award for “Angels in America”.

Supporting cast in the movie

Tony and Emmy award winners/nominees have filled the rest of the cast. The film stars Alexandra Shipp, Robin de Jesús, and Joshua Henry, both of whom have nominations for the Tony Award, and Vanessa Hudgens. Emmy Award nominee Mj Rodriguez, Emmy Award winner Bradley Whitford, Emmy and Tony Award winner Judith Light, and Tariq Trotter also feature in the film.
