The first season follows an investigation into the disappearance of a young boy (Will Byers) amid mysterious phenomena in the town and the emergence of a girl with psychokinetic skills (Eleven). Dark agencies and ominous, otherworldly forces descend on the village.

The second season focuses on Will's side effects from being in the Upside Down, with its entities crawling into the actual world. As the kids continue their war against the Upside Down forces, the third season centers on Eleven and Mike's relationship.
